From “bah humbug”
to “who knew?”
Coming off their most successful holiday campaign ever with last year’s WhoKnewVille & The Grinch, Walmart had one goal… top it. So we sought out another classic & beloved holiday story, The Muppet Christmas Carol, to be our backdrop for the season.
Our personal goal for the season was to come up with drop-worthy content that gives the internet what it wants. This year, the idea was for the entire campaign to feel more born-of-social & culturally relevant than ever before. And when you have a whole bunch of internet darlings in The Muppets to work with, the world is your oyster.
So the goal became kicking off the campaign with entertainment-first content to make fans feel confident one of their holiday favorites was in good hands. (You know, the hands of fellow millennial superfans with nothing but love & childhood nostalgia for the original.)
To us, the perfect launch came down to one idea. After all, no Christmas Carol campaign starring the Muppets would feel quite right if it didn’t have 🎶 a song... 🎶
BUILDING BUZZ
We wanted to drum up excitement with teaser content that drops hints & easter eggs about all the joy of this campaign. Muppets! Music! Muppets Being Musical! Celebs! Nostalgia! Cozy Christmas vibes! Anticipation!
Gogg Meets Frog Walton & Kermits fateful backlot meeting serves as the very first campaign breadcrumb, inviting speculation & guesses as we set up the campaign.
‘92 Throwback Our second teaser leans into the warm, fuzzy nostalgia of The Muppet Christmas Carol, borrowing the analog aesthetic of the movie’s 1992 release date.
A NEW CAROL BEGINS…
This season, Walmart is re-imagining the beloved story of “The Muppet Christmas Carol” to win over even the Scroogiest of holiday shoppers. Who knew?
